Lion President Joel reported that the Chamber of Commerce would like the Lions to help with the annual Tractor Ride which will be finishing in Nevada this year. Lion Jim reported that RAGBRAI will be coming by on Highway 210 about 25 July 2001. Perhaps we could have a concession stand. We should coordinate with the Maxwell Lions Club. Lion President Joel hasn't heard any more about having the Glaucomobile in Nevada this year. The McCallsburg Lions are scheduled to have it soon.
Lion Secretary Jerry gave a report on Pancake Day. We served 238 adults and 38 children and grossed $1258.05 if all of the ticket sales are in. Known expenses to date total $645.41 but the bill for the school janitors is not in yet. We should net between $400 and $500.
New business included a report by the nominating committee. They have the slate of officers almost completed. The slate will be announced at our next regular meeting and voted on at a later meeting.
Membership Chair LaNair Niblock presented a proposal for gaining new members. A member signing up one new member would received two months free meals or four months free meals for two new members. The new members would receive one month of free meals and pay one-half of the usual initiation fee. The offer would be in force from April through June 2001. After discussion, Lion Niblock moved to accept the proposal. A second was offered by Lion Dick and the motion was approved. It was again noted that our club needs more publicity in the local paper. Part of the discussion about new members focused on our Wednesday meeting nights. The board agreed that Monday nights should work better than Wednesdays. Lion President Joel will poll all of the members. Lion Angelo will check with Gates Hall concerning the availability of second and fourth Mondays if we decide to change our meeting nights.
Lion Jerry reported that the Nevada Parks and Recreation is seeking sponsors for Youth Baseball this summer. The cost is $170 which is the same as last year. Lion Dick moved to sponsor a team again this year. Seconded by Lion Odin and approved.
Dru Stoeffler, a 11th grader at Nevada High School, is seeking support to participate as a member of the Iowa People to People Student Ambassador program to Australia and New Zealand this summer. She would like a contribution of $100. Lion Angelo moved to give $50, seconded by Lion Loren. The motion carried.
District Governor Jan reviewed plans for the District Convention to be held in Nevada on 16 and 17 March 2001. Convention Chair Bob Hobson passed around a sign-up sheet with various work assignments. Nevada is the host Lions Club and all Nevada Lions are needed to make this convention a success. Registration is needed by 14 March.
Lion Niblock reported that Lion Dick Settle will be unable to provide a program for 28 March. Lion Jim stated that he thought he could get Bill Burke from the Burke Corporation. Other possibilities were suggested should Bill Burke not be available.
Lion Bob Hobson will host the 2 April board meeting. Lion Dick moved to adjourn, seconded by Lion John, and we adjourned at 8:32 pm.
Secretary Jerry K. Radke
