The Nevada Lions Club held its regular Board Meeting in the Community Room of the Nevada Public Library on 7 October 2002. The meeting was called to order at 7:08 p.m. by President Jim Perkins who acted as chairman, with the following members in attendance:
Jean Bodensteiner Loren Heckathorne Dean Howell Charles Lloyd Paul Malsom Jerry Radke Susan Radke
Lion Jean Bodensteiner read the Substitute Secretary's minutes for the 9 September board meeting. Lion Loren moved to accept the minutes, seconded by Lion Dean, and passed. Lion Treasurer Dean reported the checking account balance was $6697.34.
Lion Secretary Jerry presented the following bills: 1) Iowa Lions 9x7 for District and State dues = $267.75, 2) Lions Clubs International for the Club Toolbox = $22.12, 3) Sandy Jacobson for BBQ chickens = $1009.80, and 4) Gates Memorial Hall for rent = $360. There was a question concerning the Gates Hall rent. Lion Susan moved that pay all the bills except the Gates Hall bill, seconded by Lion Charles. Lion Dean said he would check on the Gates Hall bill and asked if he could pay the bill then. Lion Susan amended her motion to include paying the Gates Hall bill, again seconded by Lion Charles. The amendment and amended motion passed.
Lion President Jim said that recruiting new members is the club's top priority. Lion Charles is the Membership Chair. How do we focus? It was decided that the membership committee should meet soon and discuss this. Lion President Jim named Lions Paul, Susan, Jean, and Loren to the membership committee. It was pointed out that we need to attract quality people, that they be given complete information on being a Lions Club member before they join, and that they receive training after joining. A question arose concerning Brad Gerndt's membership in the club, especially regarding attendance and participation in club activities. Lion Secretary Jerry said that a letter needs to be sent to the member when the member does not meet the membership requirements. There was no further discussion on the topic.
District Governor Cliff Weldon will be making his official visit to our club on 11 December 2002. Lion Paul will see if he can get a program on the GRIP Mentoring activities in Nevada Schools for our 9 October meeting.
Old Business: There will be a Coming To Your Senses training in Colo this Saturday, 12 October. Lions Susan and Jean plan to attend. Lion Susan reported her findings on Lions costumes that we can purchase. She recommended a costume for $1099 plus a carrying case. No action was taken. Lion Jean again requested consideration of her registration bill from the International Lions convention. It was suggested that our club should have a policy on paying convention expenses and consider starting a Convention Fund for this purpose. This will be considered at a future meeting.
Lion Jean reported that we cleared approximately $850 from the Chicken BBQ. She handed out list of income and expenses and list of things that worked well and suggestions for improvements. It was reported that Lion Bill Horine received several good reports regarding our entries in the Lincoln Highway Days parade.
Lion Secretary Jerry was instructed to charge for four meals during the fall quarter, applying the meal canceled 11 September and not charging for the meeting near Thanksgiving that we will cancel. Lion Loren moved to adjourn, seconded by Lion Jean, and we adjourned at 8:15 pm.
Secretary Jerry K. Radke
