December 2000 Board of Directors Meeting

Lion Line

The Nevada Lions Club held its regular Board Meeting in the Jim Perkins home on 4 December 2000. The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. by President Joel Halverson who acted as chairman, with the following members in attendance:

The minutes of the 6 November 2000 board meeting were read and approved. The treasurer's balance was $5856.82.

The secretary presented the following bill: Miller's Flowers for nine flower arrangements at Spouse's Night = $119.25. Lion Dick moved to approve the bill, seconded by Lion Dean. Motion approved.

For old business Lion Jim Perkins reported that we had a successful fund raiser with Per Mar Securities taking tickets at the home Iowa State University football games. We had six or seven workers for the first five games and five workers for the last game. Lion Jerry reported that Per Mar has paid us $1440.95 for our efforts.

The move from Gates Hall to Christy Hall was discussed. We were allowed to move the Gates Hall lockers containing some of our supplies from Gates to Christy Hall along with our podium and banners. Our first meeting at Christy Hall will be on 13 December 2000.

Lion Dean presented a $500 check from Jean Carman as a memorial to deceased Lion Everett Carman. We will put the money in our project fund while looking for a suitable project. The secretary was instructed to write a "thank you" letter to Jean Carman. Lion President Joel presented a $25 check and read a note from Doris Andresen expressing her thanks for being included in Spouse's Night.

Lions Dean and Jerry had our Maliet and McDaniel Scholarship CDs consolidated at the State Bank. The two new CDs will provide 5.75% interest paid into our scholarship savings accounts in December and June. The CDs mature in 12 months.

Lion Jim Perkins reported that we are expecting entries in our Peace Poster Contest. The students will be working on the posters during the Christmas holidays. Winning posters are due at District in early January.

For new business, Jerry reported that we have the Lions calendars for 2001. We paid approximately $35 for 50 calendars. Lion Dean moved that we charge $1 apiece for them. Seconded by Lion Duane and passed.

The Mid-Winter Conference was discussed. Past District Governor Del Brown is running for International Director and needs our support. Lion Jean moved to donate $5 for the Mid-Winter silent auction. Seconded by Lion Charles and approved. The Mid-Winter Conference is 12-14 January. Lions Loren, Jim, Jean, and Jerry thought they would attend. Lion Dean moved that the club cover the costs of their registration and meals. Seconded by Lion Charles and approved.

Lion Jerry reported that Tammy Metzger from Youth and Shelter Services had called asking for help in finding mentors for elementary students. Lions Bill Horine and Paul Malsom are mentors already. Anyone interested should contact them or Tammy Metzger.

Lion President Joel read a letter of resignation from Lion Bob Klopping. He spends half of the year in Florida and has not be able to attend many of our meetings in Nevada. Lion Jean moved to accept his resignation with regrets. Seconded by Lion Jim and approved. The secretary will write Bob a letter of regret and thank him for his contributions.

Membership was discussed. The committee is still working on the five names obtained from the State Fair Lions booth. The committee will meet soon. It was noted that the Lions club is not getting the publicity the other clubs are getting in the local newspaper. Lion President Joel reported that the Brass Rail had erroneously prepared a meal for 22 November. Lion Joel will coordinate our future meetings with the Brass Rail.

Lions Dean and Dick spoke for the Southeastern Guide Dog School at Palmetto, Florida. Lion Charlie moved to donate $100 to them, seconded by Lion Duane, and passed. Lion Jerry reported that we usually donate $200 for Christmas baskets through Smitty's Super Valu, $50 to LCIF, and give $25 to Marilyn Argotsinger for being our pianist. Lion Dick moved that we do so again. Lion Loren seconded and the motion passed.

Pancake Day was discussed. We will need a place to hold it. We can get pork patties from Burke's through Lion Jim. Lion Brett Anderson is the chair for Pancake Day. Lion President Joel will contact Lion Brett concerning Pancake Day.

Lion John Wheelock will host our January meeting. Lion Charlie moved to adjourn, seconded by Lion Lynn, and we adjourned at 8:20 pm. Following the meeting, refreshments were served by Lion President Joel Halverson.
